Joint Injections Q & A

What are Joint Injections?

If you regularly experience joint pain, you might think orthopaedic surgery or prescription medications are your only treatment options. However, joint injections provide a safe, minimally invasive care method to ease swelling and inflammation while promoting mobility.

Our team at MidJersey Orthopaedics regularly uses joint injections to treat inflammatory joint conditions and sports-related injuries, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and knee injuries.

Are There Different Types of Joint Injections?

Our team at MidJersey Orthopaedics offers several types of joint injections, including:

  • Corticosteroid Injections: You might benefit from corticosteroid injections if you have osteoarthritis in one of your joints, bursitis, or tendonitis. Corticosteroid injections reduce inflammatory cell activity in the joint for three to four months at a time. They’re quick, relatively painless, and provide near-instant results.
  • Hyaluronic Acid Injections: If you regularly experience knee pain, you might benefit from hyaluronic acid injections. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance similar to your natural joint fluid. HA injections act as a natural lubricant and shock absorber.
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections: You might benefit from platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections if you suffer a sports-related injury. The team also uses PRP to relieve pain caused by osteoarthritis, joint, and muscle injuries. PRP injections can also ease discomfort caused by chronic pain and/or back pain. PRP injections use your blood’s growth factors that are found in platelets, to encourage the natural healing process. They limit swelling and inflammation while encouraging circulation and healing.
  • Placental Tissue Matrix Injections: Placental tissue matrix (PTM) injections provide another safe, effective treatment for pain caused by osteoarthritis. These injections use placental tissue obtained from a healthy baby to promote healing. Like PRP injections, PTM injections contain large amounts of growth factors.

What Type of Joint Injections are Right for Me?

Only a qualified specialist like those at MidJersey Orthopaedics can determine the type of joint injections you’ll most benefit from. During your initial consultation, your physician takes a detailed history, and conducts a comprehensive physical examination.

Also, we often also take X-rays or an MRI to get a closer look at your bones, joints, and soft tissues. After gathering this information, they can make recommendations that align with your individual needs and goals for treatment.
