Concussion Management Program

Kids playing footer - concussion management at MJO

MidJersey Neurology and MidJersey Orthopaedics are pleased to provide a comprehensive program for the prevention and treatment of concussions, also known as mild traumatic brain injuries. Our program is tailored to young athletes in middle school, high school, or on traveling sports teams.

About Concussions

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that between 1.6 and 3.8 million sports-related concussions happen annually. Concussion is usually caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head. Symptoms of this kind of brain injury include:

  • Confusion or a “foggy” feeling that often goes away soon after injury
  • Headache
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Balance problems or dizziness
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Loss of consciousness

Education and Prevention

We provide student athletes with the latest evidence-based information regarding prevention and treatment. From informal discussions with trainers and coaches, to one-on-one meetings with parents, to team lectures, our neurologists offer the education needed to stay safe.

Pre-Season Baseline ImPACT® Testing

The ImPACT® test is a computer-based examination that assesses the cognitive functioning of the athlete. It is the most widely used and scientifically validated tool currently available to monitor brain recovery after an injury.

Pre-season baseline testing—before injuries have occurred—is essential for ensuring the accuracy of your athlete’s ImPACT test. We offer baseline testing for just $10. Student athletes can complete the test on their home computer.

Injury Evaluation

If one of your athletes sustains a brain injury, or if you suspect that he or she has sustained an injury, our team is available to you at all times for consultation and treatment. On weekends and in the evenings, one of our staff is on call via phone for initial advice. Immediate evaluation in an urgent care or emergency room may be recommended if the injury occurs off-hours.

Most injuries can be initially treated in our office and same-day appointments are available for a full clinical evaluation with one of our specialists. We also offer on-site MRI.

Return to Activities

We know your athlete wants to return to activities as soon as possible. Our team supervises and coordinates recovery and a safe return to schoolwork, home activities, and eventually sports. We customize a graduated return-to-exercise program based on improvement of symptoms, clinical examinations, and follow-up ImPACT testing. Whether you are a parent, teacher, athletic trainer, or coach, our team keeps you informed. We also welcome assistance from coaches and/or trainers in the athlete’s recovery (with the parents’ permission).
